True or false? Let's test your hair knowledge.

Think you know your hair? Let's find out.

Working in a salon means we hear a lot of hair advice. Some of it is spot on. Some... not so much. Let us guide you, what is true, and what is false?

01. Cutting your hair makes it grow faster

False. Hair grows from the follicle in your scalp, so your ends have no say in how fast it grows. Regular trims can, however, prevent split ends from travelling further up the hair.

02. Your hair can get used to your shampoo

False. Your shampoo doesn't suddenly stop working because your hair got bored of it. But your hair, scalp, routine and environment can change, which might mean your shampoo needs to change too.

03. Your hair can change over time

True. Hormones, age, environment and even certain medications can affect how your hair grows and behaves.

04. Cold water makes your hair shinier

Kind of. Cold water isn't a magic shine button. Any smoothing effect is modest; your hair's condition and the products you use matter much more.

05. Split ends can be permanently repaired with a product

False. Products can temporarily smooth and seal the appearance of split ends, but once a strand has split, only a haircut can truly remove it. Sorry.

06. Your hair is technically dead

True. The hair you can see is mostly made up of keratinised cells that are no longer living. The living action happens inside the follicle. Which is also why your haircut doesn't hurt - thankfully.
